Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe

This time we visited the Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe at Wheelock Place. This was our second visit here. I would recommend more visits to the place to try out the other stuff! Because as I would exclaim: its quality food they serve there! The Japanese food served is simply extraordinary faire!

Ted and me ordered the ala-carte mixed yakitori set to share. The way the dish was served dismayed us! The yakitori sticks were actually served pinned on a baked sweet potato! This dish was quite the usual but the presentation of the palate was what scored.

Ted ordered the salmon tea rice set to complement the yakitori sticks. The serving was just nice for one person. The salmon was tender and fresh. Rice was well cooked. The tea soup was another worth complementing! Having soup served in a little teapot is not the usual soup you would expect. But this scored again for its innovativeness and as well as the fragrant tea soup! Mind you, its NOT your usual cup of soup. You have to taste for yourself to know the difference!

For my choice, I ordered the tender pork rice set made from belly pork specially flown in. Ooohh... what tender pork slices. The rice don was served with a nice yellow egg york which I gulped down in one mouthful! (see the picture above) Felt a little regretful about not mixing the egg york with the rice. Ha if you get the chance to order this, you may want to think twice and make sure you dont end up like me gulping down that lovely irresistible yoke down before mixing it up with the rice ! The don was delicious and what else can I say? Do visit the Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe located at 501 Orchard Road, #03-15/16/17, Wheelock Place, Singapore 238880 Tel: 6733 6636.

Ichiban Sushi

We visited the Ichiban Sushi at Hougang Mall. Teddy had his tooth extracted and could not take any food that is too hard. So we headed for Japanese food.

I had the Salmon Don, which was pretty reasonably priced and boy! was it delicious! Sesame oil over the juicy fresh salmon!! The don came sparkling gold and smells reek of sesame. The don was well seasoned with the right amount of sesame and the rice was cooked just nice. Not too hard or soft. It is said that good well-cooked Japanese vinegar rice should just be a little sticky but not too much. Suppose this should be it. I just cant resist my favourite salmon in the don which was very fresh indeed. The don was gobbled up within minutes. Yum.

Poor Teddy could only have chawan-mushi (steamed egg) and a shiogayaki (seasoned ginger) pork rice set. The set came served complete with miso-soup and some oranges as dessert. The serving was a lot and we could share the pork slices too. Ichiban Sushi is located at Hougang Mall, Level 2, Singapore.

CHIPPY British Takeaway

Tried a quick snack while shopping at the Raffles City shopping centre basement. The CHIPPY British Takeaway - Beer Battered Fish with Battered Fries. In other words, fish and chips!
The thing about fish and chips is that the fish has to be really fresh for it to be delicious! Yum. This one is indeed and the fish pieces were delicate! The fishes were probably battered with beer as its name is called, hence its soft and delicate texture. Its fried with a layer of flour which I felt were quite soft and crisp. The fries were crunchy and piping hot! We chose the topping of: Mayonnaise & Ketchup to go with the fishes. There is another choice of Salt & Vinegar.

The outlet also serve some interesting snacks like fried mars bars (!!), cheese sausages, calamari and others!! Real nice British mural put up at the tiny little shopfront. The only thing I would like is to have some more seats near the store for the takeaway customers. Understand there are also outlets at Central shopping centre and Tampines Mall too. Worth a try if you are looking for a nice delicious snack! CHIPPY British Takeaway is located at 252 North Bridge Road, Basement 1 #B1-58, Raffles City Shopping Centre, Singapore.

Ma maison restaurant

Gong xi fa cai! Chinese Lunar New Year was celebrated on 7 February 2008 and we had 2 days of holiday ushering the new year of the rat. Was busy visiting relatives I havent met for a while. Hope you had a wonderful time reuniting with friends and relatives at home too and may everyone have a happy, healthy and prosperous new year of the Rat!!

just before Chinese New Year, Teddy and me had gone New Year shopping at the new Central shopping centre located just beside the Clarke Quay MRT. Visited the Ma Maison Restaurant and had to recommend the fantastic dining there! The restaurant appear to be a Japanese chain. It appears to have a restaurant at Nagoya and few other places in Japan too. Some of its staff in the restaurant are also Japanese. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is just like its name - "my home". Warm and comfortable. The lighting was rather dim but I suppose this is to make the place more warm and cosy.

We decided to start off with an appetizer - scallop carpaccio. The dish was simply heavenly! Served cold, the scallops and lettuce greens were so fresh, they just melt away. The dressing compliments the fresh ingredients so well and it really starts your stomach off well as an appetizer with its taste not too sour nor too sweet. You yearn for more as the fresh after taste lingers in your mouth as you finish your mouthful...

After that, we ordered the main special - which was the "Tonkatsu rice set". It is served with miso soup, rice and desert. The set was beyond my expectations! Look at how the dressing and sauces are served, in interesting containers... The tonkatsu sauce was served in a little urn while the salad dressing was in a container. There was also a bottle of sea salt which you have to grind yourself. Really interesting.

The tonkatsu was served on top a strainer so that the oil will be kept away. Really thoughtful.

Last was our desert. An unforgettable one! It looked dark green with little black dots on it. I asked what this was. Green tea goma (seasame) ice-cream. Surprisingly, contrary to its ugly looks, it tastes simply wonderful!! I wish there was more of such ice-cream. Wonder if I can get my hands on this from the Japanese supermarkets. Its really simply lovely! You got to try it out.

Overall, I rate the restaurant very good. The dining experience was good and the food was great too! Ma Maison Restaurant is located at #03-96, Central (just beside Clarke Quay MRT), Singapore.
